In Year 6, we are paired with Reception pupils and help guide them through their first year at Pembroke Primary School. Every Thursday, we visit their classroom to read stories with them. The children get to choose their own stories, and we assist by spelling out words and discussing the pictures. By doing so, we engage their young minds and support the development of their literacy and numeracy skills. We also write letters to our buddies, which are sent to their parents to introduce ourselves at the start of the school year. This helps the children feel comfortable with us. We enjoy receiving drawings and letters back from them as well.
During lunchtime, our buddies often come to us for help with small tasks like peeling their fruit or assisting when they get hurt. Sometimes, we even help cut up their food in the dinner hall, and we enjoy sitting with them as we eat. The Reception pupils are always excited to see us, both inside and outside of school. Being their Year 6 buddy is something we truly love.
